Sustainability
Meadow & Fern Flowers advocates eco ethical choices that care for the earth and our community. We’re committed to providing a sustainable floristry service for the Cairns and greater region. Here’s a little about what we do in store to maintain our eco ethos.
First let’s look at what sustainability means, “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance”. So in floristry it makes complete sense to aim for this balance as each day we are connecting, handling and appreciating a natural product. Flowers are gift from the earth and we need to look after our home.
Minimising waste - we all buy what we need. Pre orders are particularly helpful, as this helps reduce wastage and keeps costs down which are passed onto the customer. We try and buy from local growers where possible, this reduces emissions and supports our local farmers. Any leftover flowers are dried and pressed and turned into beautiful handmade gifts that we sell in store.
We choose our packaging carefully - All our bouquets are wrapped in paper and arrangements in cardboard or ceramic pots. No floral foam is used, floral foam is a single use plastic that is not biodegradable. We only use eco-friendly alternatives in store. Items that can be reused again and again and use floral wool in some arrangements. Floral wool is an eco-friendly alternative to floral foam. We only use cardboard and paper to package items for delivery. We also support other small eco businesses to help us provide what is required to have in store.
We buy what is in season - this means not buying imported flowers. Buying flowers internationally is a heavy carbon footprint and they use heavy levels of chemical/pesticide use. We should be celebrating and enjoying the varieties of flowers we get with the seasons and supporting our local farmers.
